  • Short Cycle Assessments to track student mastery of learning standards
  • Individualized Instruction differentiated to each student & driven by assessment data

18.  What is a charter school?

Charter schools are publicly funded, tuition-free, and generally open to all students—in this way they are similar to traditional public schools. However, charter schools have their own “charter” to operate independently, outside of the local school district. This gives charter schools more freedom in how they allocate their budgets and develop their educational offerings. For example, charter schools can model their programs around educational philosophies such as Montessori or create programs geared to athletics, STEM education, or performing arts. While charter schools have additional flexibility, they are still accountable to educational outcomes and can have their charter revoked if they do not meet the appropriate standards. Charter schools are strengthening our public education system by ensuring that more students, especially those from underserved communities, receive the high-quality education and services they need to thrive. Working together, charter and traditional public schools can improve learning for all students.

How We Individualize Instruction

At Lorain Preparatory High School, we implement the ACCEL Instructional Model (AIM) which starts with an Ohio Standards-based curriculum taught by properly certified and licensed teachers. We frequently assess students (on a bi-weekly schedule) to know if a student is working ahead, falling behind, or right on track when it comes to mastering the learning standards for their grade level.

We review the data from these regular assessments and tailor instruction to each student’s needs. While many schools formally assess students at the end of the quarter, we believe that assessing students in shorter cycles gives our teachers early and regular insight into student progress.

Our teachers utilize a variety of learning activities and tools each day to individualize instruction in each subject area. Students receive whole-class instruction, small group instruction, and one-on-one instruction. Our teachers additionally utilize Education Technology and other adaptive curricular tools to maximize learning in each school day.

All Teachers Properly Certified & Licensed

All teachers meet the educator qualification requirements outlined in the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and Ohio Revised Code: Bachelor’s degree, grade-level teaching license/certificate & ability to demonstrate subject area expertise.
